Upgraded my account at HostDepartment

Hosting November 25th, 2007

I have upgraded my account at Hostdepartment to “UNLIMITED DEVELOPER UNIX”.

Hostdepartment is not that bad after all. They offer unlimited number of dedicated IP addresses and they also offer support 24/7. It is better that other hosts who don’t have enough staff even to tend to support tickets. Most hosts charge about $1-2 per dedicated IP per month, so Hostdepartment does sound like a good choice if one has more than one domain.

I have left alone movable type. I am unable to configure it, I will try to install it on my Linux machine first then try it on a real host. So I have installed wordpress on my new domain. Life has to go around…

I am shifting hosts

Computers November 20th, 2007

I am shifting hosts again. I tried www.hostdepartment.com, then read some “terrific” reviews about them and decided to opt for another host. I tried to install Movable Type, but couldn’t get it running. I contacted support but they said that they do not allow CGI [or something like that] on that plan. If I wanted to upgrade, I had to delete that plan and signup again. I have requested for a refund which should be on the way within a few days. I may signup for the developer plan with them.

Installed StarOffice using Google Updater

Google, Internet, Microsoft, Science November 13th, 2007

Installed StarOffice using Google Updater

I installed StarOffice using Google updater and I would say it is very good. If you are looking for a serious alternative to MS Office, StarOffice is for you.

StarOffice is not free [unlike OpenOffice, on which it is based]. It costs about $70, way much less than MS Office. However, it combines many proprietary features like a better spell checker and so is better than OpenOffice. I read somewhere that Sun takes a snapshot of OpenOffice source code once in a while and then adds some features to it to make StarOffice.
