Are we in the middle of a pagerank update ?
Internet October 1st, 2007
I came across a post mentioning about pagerank update at DP. May be we are in the middle of a pagerank update…Maybe.
I checked the pageranks of my sites, but I have not observed any changes. Even the datacenter watch (at Rankalert.net) turned out negative. May be I should wait for some more time and check again.
However, there is one truth: Pagerank has no significance when it comes to performance in search engines. There are many reasons behind this:
- The pagerank which we see on the Google toolbar is not up-to-date. Google updates the actual pagerank regularly. However, it is exported to the toolbar only once in three months.
- The pagerank of a site is not a measure of its traffic. Neither is it a measure of the search engine optimization efforts involved behind the site.
- Google is not the only search engine out there. There are many others that can still mean a lot of traffic to your sites.
I know many sites with low pagerank dominating the search engines while sites with high pagerank have failed. However, many webmasters still stick with it. And if you want to sell links on your site, start chasing pagerank first.
I seriously wish Google would completely abandon the concept of “this pagerank” and be more open with webmasters. When that happens, it will at least save us the thousand posts at webmaster forums and blogs.
