Hitachi has announced a revolutionary technology that makes it possible to create hard disks with capacities in the range of 1-4 Tb. When this technology will become fully feasible somewhere in 2009, it will be possible to have desktop hard drives with capacities exceeding 4Tb and laptop hard disks with 1 Tb. Soon, other companies involved in the manufacture of hard disks will follow and this may make multi-tera byte hard drives much cheaper.

Hitachi officially announced:

"Hitachi continues to invest in deep research for the advancement of hard disk drives as we believe there is no other technology capable of providing the hard drive’s high-capacity, low-cost value for the foreseeable future," said Hiroaki Odawara, Research Director for Hitachi. "This is an achievement for consumers as much as it is for Hitachi. It allows Hitachi to fuel the growth of the ‘Terabyte Era’ of storage, which we started, and gives consumers virtually limitless ability for storing their digital content."
