WordPress is great! It is very easy to use and there are plenty of beautiful themes available for free. But by default, it is not fully optimized for search engines. Making a few modifications to WordPress can make your blog perform much better. If you want your blog or website (that is powered by WordPress) to perform well in the search engine ranking positions, you have to make a few hacks. These hacks are very simple and there is a lot of information on how to do these effectively.

Here are some tips:

  • Title Tag: The usual title of any page looks something like this: Name of the blog >> Name of the post. Now this is OK as keywords do get included in the title tag. However, I believe that "Name of the blog" is not needed and can be removed by deleting <?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?> in the title tag in header.php.
  • Meta tags: WordPress doesn’t support meta tags by default. Though meta tags are no longer used by search engines like Google, it is still recommended to use them. There are many free plugins that let you to add meta tags to your wordpress blog or site.
  • Permalinks: By default, the permalink feature in not enabled. You have to change it in the Options tab in wp-admin. Permalinks make it possible to have keywords in the url of the webpage. This is known to give better performance in search engines.

To accomplish all these tasks in a single go, you can download an all in one plugin. See http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/ for more details. According to the official website, this plugin allows you to:

  • Optimize titles of blog posts for search engines and makes it possible to tweak them further
  • Generate meta tags automatically
  • Avoid duplicate content penalty
