Splogs: Cancer infecting the blogosphere
Internet October 22nd, 2007
What are splogs ?
Splogs are blogs with spam. This spam can be either:
- scrapped content, stolen posts
- links…links…links to other sites to alter search engine rankings
- content from article directories
Or a combination of the above three.
Who sets up splogs?
There are many people who setup splogs:
- lazy and over-smart online marketers
- professional spammers
- experimenters who try to test how perfect search engines are
How are splogs set up ?
Splogs are setup using specialized software:
- scripts that create hundreds of blogs on free bloggin platforms like blogger and wordpress
- scripts to scrape content from other sites/blogs and post it automatically as "posts" on many splogs
Are splogs profitable ?
Yes, they are! And this is reason why so many of them exist. In fact, about 70% of all blogs on blogger seem to be splogs. While we cannot be sure about this, the actual figure may be somewhere close by.
Why splogs are bad ?
Splogs are bad because they serve no purpose other than making money for the splogger. The information they present is nothing more than jumbled up keywords often making no sense. Splogs also affect search engine rankings adversely.
To conclude, Splogs-cancer infecting the blogosphere. I doubt there is an effective medicine.
